What ARE RAFTERS?

Rafters are a very important component of a roof. Roof rafters run vertically from the lowest point of the roof (eaves) to the highest point of the roof (ridge).

Together with the roof purlins, the rafters play a crucial role in the roof's structural integrity . The material of the rafters imposes specific requirements on the roof truss' stability. Depending on the design , their arrangement can also vary.

Insights into GELO production

the use of SPARROWS

The roof structure is the framework that supports the roof. Normally, wooden beams are used for the roof structure.

A roof can be constructed as a rafter roof, a collar beam roof, or a purlin roof.

rafter roof

Here the rafters form a triangle with the attic. The advantage here is that no beams disturb the roof space and the entire interior of the attic can be used.

collar beam roof

The collar beam roof is a variant of the rafter roof. A collar beam connects the opposite rafters in the upper part of the roof as a cross beam. The collar beam acts as a horizontal reinforcement.

purlin roof

Here a purlin is used as a ridge, which is supported by a post. The rafters rest on the purlin. The disadvantage is that the space under the roof is affected by the supporting beams.

FAQ - about rafters

How strong does the roof rafter have to be?

The thickness depends on a number of factors, such as the roof construction, the type of roof, the load on the roof and the insulation. For a carport roof, a width of 6cm may be sufficient, but for a single-family home, the rafters should be much wider. Calculations are necessary to achieve a solid construction.

How much do roof rafters cost?

The prices for roof rafters can vary depending on the manufacturer, quality and type of wood. Unfortunately, wood prices also fluctuate. So please feel free to contact us and we will give you the best possible price.

What are purlins and rafters?

A purlin is a beam in the roof structure that runs parallel to the roof ridge and supports the rafters that extend from the ridge to the eaves. Rafters are the diagonal wooden beams that primarily support the roof. The rafters lie above the purlins. Metal plates or screws are usually used to connect the purlins and rafters.
