What are boards and what do “formwork” mean?

Boards are the side pieces that are first sawn off a log to achieve a rectangular shape. They can be used as raw material for planed timber , as cladding , or in the manufacture of packaging , the latter being IPPC-compliant and heat-treated against pests.

Formwork consists of hollow molds into which liquid concrete is poured. A mold is constructed using wooden boards. The liquid concrete is then poured into the formwork and hardens there. The formwork determines the surface finish and shape of the concrete element or structure. The formwork should not change shape during the concrete pouring process; therefore, it should be constructed as carefully and sturdily as possible.

FAQ

How high do the formwork boards have to be?

This is easy to determine: you take the depth of the foundation trench minus the layer of gravel plus the overhang above ground level. This gives the required height of the formwork boards. It is best to cut some 20 centimetre long wedges from the battens to support the boards laterally against the garden soil.

What does formwork mean?

Formwork brings liquid concrete into shape and holds it until it has completely hardened. If you build with concrete, you really can't avoid formwork.

Why use wood for formwork?

Plastic, wood or steel can be used as materials for formwork. Wood is considered to be the cheapest. Wood is often the first choice, especially for DIY projects, for example when it comes to building formwork for self-built garden sheds. Wooden boards are used here, which are fixed in the ground with pegs and then stabilized with cross braces and supported with wedges.
